Super Duper Multitasking can be enjoyed with a keyboard, but a controller is recommended.
Officially supported controllers: Xbox (360 and later), DualSense/DualShock 4*, Switch Pro*, Steam Deck/Steam Controller*.
* Supported via Steam Input and official Steam Input configurations.
Please note that DualSense and Steam Deck do not yet have Steam Input configurations or in-game artwork. This is planned for a future update.
Other controllers may work, but may require third-party tools, and no support will be provided.
Please see more details in the FAQ section below.

What is Super Duper Multitasking?
Super Duper Multitasking is a game, but is also an experiment, one that tests your ability to play up to 5 continuously-shuffling minigames at the same time. Now, it can certainly be played as a game, in one of several different modes. With Mission Mode, you can even approach it as a game with a distinct start and end that can be "beaten." However, with Super Duper Multitasking, I feel that you get much more than a mere game. It's a tool that can push your video gaming skills to their limits, that will bend your mind in ways that other games cannot, that can unlock potential you never knew you had, and that can open the door to new experiences--either by yourself, shared with friends, or streamed to your favorite audience.

My hope is that you will enjoy Super Duper Multitasking, both as a traditional video game, as well as in ways that you have not enjoyed video games before. Please share your feedback with me, either on yyrgames.com via the contact form, or on Steam, via its forums or user reviews. I'll be reading all of it.

I also realize that, because Super Duper Multitasking is so different from other games, it is certainly not for everybody. I'd encourage you to try it out with the free version, "Super Multitasking GO!" However, if you purchase this game, and find that it is not for you, I encourage you to take advantage of the Steam refund policy. I really appreciate that you took the time to try out my work, even if it turned out that you didn't enjoy it. Time is the one resource we can't get back, so for the time you gave to me, I thank you.

Explanation of Game Modes

Tutorial: In just 2 minutes you'll be taken through the basics, and you'll multitask for the first time! It's highly recommended that you start here; on your first play, the game will offer to take you straight into it.

Quickplay Mode: The core game mode. Choose between a number of options, then last as long as possible. You'll start by playing just one minigame at a time. The longer you last, the more minigames you'll need to play at once, and the harder those minigames will be to complete. If you make a single mistake, the game ends. Your best times will be tracked, both locally and on Steam Leaderboards.

Mission Mode: 100 scripted Missions await you here. They start off very easy, but eventually become quite difficult and will require practice to complete. Each typically lasts for a certain amount of time, usually under 30 seconds or until the minigames are completed; if you don't make any mistakes during that time, the Mission is cleared. Try to clear them all! There is no limit to the number of attempts, so proceed through them at your own pace. Adjustable difficulty and speedrunning support are also available (see below).

Versus Mode: Play 2-player versions of specially-selected minigames head-to-head against a friend or rival! Complete a minigame first, or outlast your opponent, and you'll get a point; first one to 7, 11, or 21 points wins! It's a wildly unique experience that you won't soon forget!

Gauntlet Mode: You'll choose a difficulty, then play five 30-second rounds. These skip the buildup and go straight into the action! Unlike in other modes, if you make a mistake, the game simply continues. At the end of the five rounds, you'll be given a skill score, based on the difficulty you chose and the number of mistakes you made.

Training: Two separate modes for learning the minigames and practicing multitasking. Difficulties are adjustable, and the game continues even if you make mistakes. Great for building your skills!

Practice Mode: A fully customizable playground. Set up any situation you like, using any of the 24 unique minigames. Choose their timing, as well as what happens when they're done. Use this to practice difficult situations, or to create challenging new conditions, for yourself or for others.

Bonus Modes: These are variations of Quickplay Mode that feature a specific minigame running continuously as other minigames shuffle in and out. Try these unique spins on Super Duper Multitasking and see how you fare! Some Bonus Modes even feature exclusive minigame variants that can't be played in other modes!

Tournament Mode: Up to 24 players can attempt the same sequence in Quickplay Mode. Last the longest to win!

The XP system

As you play this game, you will accumulate XP and level up. XP in Super Duper Multitasking is a measurement of your overall progress in the game.

You can only earn a certain number of XP for each combination of modes and settings. So, if all you're doing is playing the same mode with the same settings repeatedly, you will not earn very many XP. To maximize your XP gain, play all of the different modes, change settings often, and try your best!

Leveling up doesn't unlock anything (apart from Achievements), but as you gain levels, you should notice your skill at this game naturally increasing. =)

Quickplay Mode

The core mode of the game pits you against a never-ending onslaught of continuously-shuffling minigames. Last as long as possible without making a mistake! Compete against friends, or go for the top of the Leaderboards!

Here is an explanation of the available options on the Quickplay Mode menu:

Number of Slots - Choose between 3, 4, and 5. This determines the maximum number of games you'll encounter at once. (Certain variations of minigames will not appear in 3-slot mode.)

Minigame Collection - Select between ORIGINAL, SUPER, and ULTIMATE. SUPER is the default option, and contains the 17 unique minigames from Super Multitasking. ORIGINAL contains 12 unique minigames from Multitasking 1.0. ULTIMATE contains the full set of 24 unique minigames, 7 of them being new to Super Duper Multitasking! If the sheer variety of minigames feels intimidating to you, you should consider choosing ORIGINAL until you're more comfortable with the game.

Difficulty - Choose between EASY, NORMAL, HARD and MAXIMUM. EASY ramps up very slowly, keeps the minigames simple, and has you playing a maximum of 2 minigames for several minutes before things get tough. NORMAL ramps up at a pace that most players will enjoy. HARD gets very tough within just 2 to 3 minutes. MAXIMUM is just nasty!

To keep the menu uncluttered, these are all that display by default. But if you select OPTIONS instead of START, you will be able to access the following settings:

Minigame Difficulty - This option sets the initial difficulty, as well as the rate of difficulty increase, for the minigames themselves, and does not affect the difficulty of the multitasking. EASY keeps the minigames very simple for several minutes. NORMAL ramps up at a pace that most players will enjoy. HARD requires that you pay some level of attention to the minigames in order to succeed. MAXIMUM presents all minigames at their highest possible difficulty!

Multitasking Difficulty - This option sets the rate of difficulty increase for the multitasking and does not affect the minigames themselves. EASY ramps up very slowly, and has you playing a maximum of 2 minigames for several minutes. NORMAL ramps up at a pace that most players will enjoy. HARD has you playing 3 minigames simultaneously by the 2-minute mark. MAXIMUM has you always playing as many minigames as the number of slots you selected!

Fast Forward - New to Super Duper Multitasking. If you've ever thought, "I like Quickplay Mode, but I don't like how long it takes for it to ramp up," then this is for you. With Fast Forward, you can skip up to the first 90 seconds, in 15-second increments, as long as you've already lasted at least twice as long as what you want to skip. For example, you can skip the first minute if you've lasted at least 2 minutes on the current settings. Using this does not disqualify you from setting new personal bests or posting to Leaderboards.

Quickplay Mode games end when you fail to achieve any minigame's goal, or when any player character is struck or falls. If you have chosen to participate in network features, and you set a personal best time, your time will be posted to Steam Leaderboards. Leaderboards exist for every possible combination of Number of Slots, Minigame Collection, Minigame Difficulty, and Multitasking Difficulty, so go for it =)

After the end of the game, you'll be brought to a menu where you can retry, change settings, return to the main menu, or quit to Attract Mode.

Mission Mode / Mission Speedrun Mode

Mission Mode contains a total of 100 fully scripted Missions. These will start off very easy but will eventually get very, very difficult. You have an unlimited number of tries to complete them, so do your best! Use your wits, skills, and determination to ultimately conquer all 100! Your progress will be saved after each attempt, so you can quit at any time and come back later to pick up where you left off.

Each Mission features between 2 and 5 minigames and lasts for a specific duration, usually between 10-30 seconds, or until all minigames are cleared, depending on the situation. The duration will not be displayed onscreen; you'll have to discover it for yourself! The Mission is cleared if you reach the end without making a mistake. If you fail to achieve a goal, or if any player character is struck or falls, you lose, and you'll have to try again. Clues to completing some Missions can be found in their names or descriptions, visible from the menu; tips will also be displayed after failing a Mission. If you're having trouble, try lowering the difficulty setting, or try using Practice Mode to set up a similar situation. You can also play more of the other game modes for practice.

Here's an explanation of the options on the Mission Mode start menu:

Course - The Missions are divided into sets called Courses, each containing between 10 and 30 Missions. There's a Course for beginners, three Courses each focusing on 3-slot, 4-slot, and 5-slot Missions, and finally, a Course for experts containing the hardest Missions in the game! There are also two special Courses, one containing the whoie set of 100 Missions, and one containing the 42 specific Missions from Super Multitasking.

Mission Difficulty - You can play the Missions' minigames at their designed difficulty (100%), or lower them to 90%, 75%, 50%, or 0% of their designed difficulty. You will still need to multitask the same number of minigames, but the minigames themselves will be easier. When you clear a Mission, it will automatically be marked Cleared on all difficulties lower than what you played.

Speedrun Mode - You can attempt to complete an entire Course in a single session. A timer in the bottom-right corner of the screen will keep track of the total time you've taken (including menu time). If you are successful, your final time and number of attempts can be posted to Leaderboards. If you quit, you can't continue the Speedrun later; if you would like to try again, you'll have to start over. However, your progress and results will be merged with your normal Mission Mode data, whether or not you complete the Speedrun.

Versus Mode

Versus Mode is a head-to-head battle for 2 simultaneous players! There is nothing else in all of gaming quite like it =)
It's the Red Player versus the Blue Player. The first one to 7, 11, or 21 points wins!

Gameplay ultimately works similarly to other modes, but Versus features special versions of several minigames. They work in one of two ways:

1) Minigames where players go head-to-head, like Paddle, Tennis, Space, or Spike Ball. Both Red and Blue characters will appear onscreen, and are controlled by their respective players. These games last--and speed up--until one player fails. The player outlasting their opponent earns 1 point.

2) Minigames featuring a specific goal, like Stop, Greater, Quick Draw, or Slots. These minigames look the same as in single-player modes, but the first player to complete the goal earns 1 point. Or, if either player fails (answers incorrectly, etc.), their opponent scores 1 point instead.

If players tie on any minigame--for example, if neither player completes a game with a goal, or if both players fail at the same time--then the TRAILING player scores 1 point. Do NOT get complacent just because you're winning! (If players are currently tied, no points are scored from a draw.)

The game ends when one player reaches the target score AND is ahead of their opponent by at least one point.

Here's an explanation of the options on the Versus Mode menu:

Points to Win - Choose between 7, 11, or 21.

Number of Slots - Choose between 3, 4, or 5 slots.

Difficulty - Choose between Easy, Normal, Hard, or Maximum. Note that regardless of this setting, the difficulty will still ramp up more quickly than it does in Quickplay Mode.

Minigame Difficulty / Multitasking Difficulty - Just as in Quickplay Mode, the Minigame and Multitasking difficulties can be adjusted independently. See above for more details.

Gauntlet Mode

Gauntlet Mode is a multitasking test that ramps up quickly, and always lasts exactly two and a half minutes, split into five 30-second rounds. The multitasking will be tough, but you can freely select the difficulty of the minigames. Unlike in other modes, if you fail a minigame, gameplay continues, so do your best! When you finish, you'll be given a grade and a score; the score is based on how many minigames you played/failed, as well as the minigame difficulty you selected.

Each round will feature a certain theme. It could be a single minigame running continuously with others shuffling in and out around it; it could be one minigame changing positions as others appear; it could be two of the same minigame appearing simultaneously, along with others; it could be an emphasis on minigames with distinct goals; or, it could just be absolute mayhem. These themes will occur in a semi-random order, and will be shuffled each time you play.

Here is an explanation of the options on the Gauntlet Mode menu:

Number of Slots - Pretty self-explanatory.

Minigame Collection - Choose ORIGINAL, SUPER, or ULTIMATE. These options are explained above.

Minigame Difficulty - This represents the difficulty of the minigames across all slots, as a percentage of the maximum possible, adjustable in 10% increments from 0% to 100%. All minigames will be played at this difficulty; it will not increase during play.

Training Modes

Training consists of two separate modes: Minigame Training and Multitasking Training.

The purpose of Minigame Training is to introduce the minigames themselves. You can choose a Minigame Collection and difficulty, plus optionally show instructions the first time a minigame appears. There is no multitasking in this mode.

Multitasking Training allows you to choose a difficulty for minigames and for multitasking, and then practice. The difficulty will not increase during play.

Both modes will allow you to continue playing for as long as you like, even if you make mistakes. (You must access the Pause Menu to exit training, as it will not end on its own.)

Here is an explanation of the options on the Training Mode menus:

Number of Slots - Choose from 3, 4, or 5.

Minigame Collection - Choose between ORIGINAL, SUPER, or ULTIMATE, explained above.

Minigame Difficulty - Select the difficulty of all minigames, as a percentage of the maximum possible. The difficulty will not increase during training.

Display Instructions (Minigame Training only) - If ON, play instructions will be shown briefly when a minigame appears for the first time.

Multitasking Difficulty (Multitasking Training only) - Choose a number. The minimum value is 0; the maximum is the number of slots you selected above. The whole number represents the number of minigames that will ALWAYS be playing at once (note that there will always be at least 1 minigame playing). The fraction represents the chance that an additional minigame will appear, with higher values increasing the chance. For example, if you set Multitasking Difficulty to 2.5, there will always be 2 minigames playing, with a moderate chance of a third appearing. The menu will fully explain the option you've selected.

Practice Mode

Practice Mode allows you to freely control everything that happens, so you can set up any situation you want.* Practice tough spots, create new challenges for your friends, or just create the most horrific thing imaginable!

* The only restriction: you cannot run the "Dance" minigame more than once simultaneously. Sorry!

Here is an explanation of what does what on the Practice Mode menu:

Start - Gameplay will begin, as long as you've set up a minigame in at least one slot.

Number of Slots - Pretty self-explanatory.

Minigame Collection - Choose ORIGINAL, SUPER, or ULTIMATE. These options are explained above.

Minigame Difficulty - This represents the difficulty of the minigames across all slots, as a percentage of the maximum possible. It can't be set individually for each slot; all minigames will be played at this difficulty.

Game Over - The default is ON. If you set this to OFF, making a mistake will not end the game. You can instead continue to play the minigames that you have not failed, until either your script is finished or you quit. Note that turning this OFF will disqualify you from earning certain Achievements.

Autoplay - The default is OFF. If you set this to ON, the computer will play the minigames automatically. Note that turning this ON will disqualify you from earning certain Achievements. Please note that the computer's intelligence was not the highest priority on my list, so it's not capable of playing all the minigames perfectly, but it's close!

Slot - Choose from TOP, UPPER, LEFT, CENTER, or RIGHT. This setting doesn't change anything on its own; it represents the slot you're currently editing, using the settings below this:

Game - Choose the minigame that will run in this slot. You can choose between Empty, Random, or any of the specific minigames that run in this slot.

Start Delay - If you want the minigame to begin immediately, leave this at 0 sec. If you want it to begin after a delay, choose the delay here in seconds from 1 to 30.

Duration - Choose the duration of this minigame in seconds, from 1 to 30. Note that minigames requiring you to achieve specific goals do not have a set duration, so you're not able to select one here.

After End - Choose between END, REPEAT or RANDOM. The default is END. If you set this to REPEAT, the minigame will start over every time it has been completed. If you set this to RANDOM, a random minigame will start every time it has been completed. Depending on what you set here, you may need to quit from the Pause menu in order to end the session.

Exit - Quit Practice Mode and return to the main menu.

Bonus Modes

Bonus Modes work in the exact same fashion as Standard Mode, with one major difference: depending on which of the 10 Bonus Modes you pick, one particular minigame will be continuously running in one of the minigame slots. Other minigames will shuffle in and out. Just as in Quickplay Mode, select a difficulty and last as long as possible! Your best times will be posted to Steam Leaderboards. (When playing Bonus Modes, you are not able to adjust minigame and multitasking difficulty independently. Sorry!)

If you choose a Bonus Mode that continuously runs a minigame in the Left Stick slot, you have the option of running that minigame in the Right Stick slot instead.

Most of these modes do not require special explanation, but there are a few that are unique enough to mention:

Workout Mode: This features an expansion of the Dance minigame, in which you will play a full-length song. On the start screen you can not only choose your difficulty, but also which song you would like to play. You will also find "Dance Pad Config," in which you can set up a second controller or dancepad for the Dance minigame, which will run in the Center slot unlike usual.

The intended way to play this Bonus Mode is using a dancepad to play the Dance minigame, while holding a controller in your hands to play the others. You can also just use a keyboard for all of it, though.

When you reach the end of the song, you'll receive a score from 0 to 1 million (the maximum possible) and a grade, along with your detailed results. Have fun!

Note: if the timing doesn't feel right, head to Help & Options and modify the "Dance" Offset Adjustment.
* Because the stepcharts are semi-randomly generated, there are no Leaderboards for this mode. However, your best score for each difficulty will be saved.

Nibble Me This: This features an expansion of the Snake minigame. You will play a recreation of the classic game "Nibbles" which was featured in MS-DOS QBasic back in 1991. All of the original levels are reproduced here. How far can you get? Your performance will be measured solely by your Nibbles score; that is what will be posted to Leaderboards.

The goal of each round is to collect the numbers from 1 through 9. When you collect the 9, the round is cleared and the next one begins. Each number scores 100 points times the value of the number collected.

You begin with 5 lives. Each time you either crash OR fail any other minigame, 1 life is lost; the game ends when your lives are gone.

Due to how tough this is, multitasking difficulty will ramp up more slowly than in Quickplay Mode.

It is important to note that if you crash in Nibbles, you lose 1000 points and must restart the current round from the beginning. So, try not to crash towards the end of a round! (When the game is over, the score posted to Leaderboards will be the highest score you had. So if you got 22000 points but then crashed twice, your score will say 20000, but your final score will actually be 22000.)

Brick Breaker: This features an expansion of the Paddle minigame. You will play a classic brick-breaker game! Try to hit all of the bricks! If you manage to clear the entire wall, touch the ball with the paddle; the wall will be rebuilt, enabling you to score more points! (The speed of the game will increase slightly with each new wall.)

Bricks score 1 to 5 points each, depending on their color. Your performance will be measured solely by your score; that is what will be posted to Leaderboards.

You begin with 5 balls. In addition to missing the ball, you will also lose 1 ball if any other minigame is failed. When all balls are lost, the game is over.

Space War Plus More: This features an expansion of the Space minigame. You will play a classic-style space shoot-em-up! Press LEFT and RIGHT to move and UP or DOWN to fire! Defeat the aliens; avoid their shots and ramming attacks! Defeat the entire formation and a new one will appear, but it'll be fiercer than the last!

Each alien is worth between 30 and 60 points, depending on their row in the formation. Aliens charging at you, rather than just staying in formation, are worth double points. Your performance will be measured solely by your score; that is what will be posted to Leaderboards.

You begin with 5 spacecraft. You'll lose 1 spacecraft if it collides with an alien or a missile, OR if any other minigame is failed. When all spacecraft are lost, the game is over.

Tournament Mode

Between 2 and 24 players attempt the same Quickplay Mode sequence, one after another. The game will keep track of everyone's time ranking. The player that lasts longest is the winner!

Number of Players - Select the number of players here.

Seed - You can optionally select the seed here. The seed determines the basis of the sequence. If you choose a seed you used before, the beginning of the sequence will be identical, but it may vary afterwards depending on a number of factors. You can also type this in directly (and press Backspace to back up).

Help & Options

Here is a description of all of the settings you'll find in the Help & Options menu:
Display Options: This sub-menu features several options pertaining to how the game is displayed, described below:

Display Options > Controller Icons: Choose your controller type here; the game will display icons for each slot that look like the controller you're using. If you select "Switch," the confirm and cancel buttons will also be swapped. Apart from that, this setting will not change how input works; it only changes the appearance of the icons. (This menu will automatically appear the first time a controller is connected.)

Display Options > Center Slot Position: You can change the location of the Center slot, if desired. The game will still refer to it as "Center."

Display Options > Quickplay Post-Game Tips: If you turn this off, the post-game tips in Quickplay Mode will not appear.

Display Options > Rank Display: Displays difficulty information during gameplay. There's an explanation in the FAQ below.

Display Options > HUD Display: Displays game time and mode information during gameplay. Turn this OFF if you want as little visual information on the screen as possible.

Display Options > Screen Size: If Super Duper Multitasking is too large to fit entirely on your screen, you can lower this setting. It can be adjusted from the default of 100% all the way down to 80%, if desired.

Display Options > Screen Mode: You can set this to Full Screen (the default), or Windowed at several different resolutions from 480p all the way up to 4K. Restart the game for changes to take effect. (If you start the game in Windowed mode and your selected size doesn't actually fit on the screen, the game will automatically use the next setting that fits.)

Keyboard Config: You can assign all key bindings here. Follow the onscreen instructions.

Sound Volume: You can adjust this from 100% (the default) all the way down to 0% (no sound).

Vibration: If ON, if you're playing with a controller, and if that controller supports vibration, the controller will vibrate when you make a mistake that ends gameplay.

"Dance" Timing Adjustment: If you're playing the "Dance" minigame or the "Workout Mode" Bonus Mode, you're sure that you're hitting the arrows in time to the music, but you're not getting "Perfect!!!" ratings, you might need to adjust this, depending on your audio/video setup.

Enter Guest Mode: If you have friends or guests over and want to pass the controller around, but don't want others to set personal bests, mess up your Mission Mode progress, etc., then you'll want to use this. Turning this ON disables saving, Leaderboards, and Achievements until the game is restarted.

Network Opt-Out: Turn this ON to disable all Steam Leaderboards and Stats. This can be turned on or off at any time, but any results earned while it is ON cannot be submitted to Leaderboards later.

How To Play: General info on how to play, as well as instructions and tips pertaining to the individual minigames, can be found here.

Erase Save Data: Here, you can reset Quickplay Mode's local leaderboards, Quickplay Mode's statistics, your progress in Mission Mode, or your Bonus Mode records, or even the entirety of your saved data (this will reset you to XP level 1, as well). Deleted data cannot be recovered, so only use this if you're certain that you want to delete your data.

FAQ

Q: The game crashed. What should I do?
A: The most common cause of crashes in my games, in my experience, is having an old version of the Steam client and/or the game itself. Try restarting the Steam client by right-clicking the Steam icon, clicking "Exit Steam," and relaunching Steam. The client and/or the game will update automatically. Then, relaunch the game and try again. If you are still seeing a crash, e-mail me at yyr@yyrgames.com and tell me about it. Include as much detail as you can about what caused the crash, and a screenshot if applicable. Thanks!

Q: The game seems kinda choppy/laggy. How can I fix it?
A: If your monitor's refresh rate is above 60 Hz, try lowering it to 60 Hz. This game was designed to run at 60 FPS, so higher refresh rates can cause the game to stutter. I'm hoping to address this in a future update.

Q: Is there multiplayer?
A: Yes! Try the two-player Versus mode! Head to the Main Menu > Multiplayer > Versus and have a blast! There's also Tournament Mode, which allows for 2-24 players to play the exact same Quickplay Mode sequence and see who's best.

Q: My controller isn't responding properly.
A: This issue has occurred when using Steam Input with controllers that natively use Xinput. Super Duper Multitasking natively supports Xbox controllers, so it's not necessary to use Steam Input, and it has caused problems with some controllers. If you're still having trouble using an Xbox controller, try turning this option off. Right-click Super Duper Multitasking in the Library, click "Properties..." and then click "Controller" along the left sidebar. Change the "Override for Super Duper Multitasking" setting to something other than "Enable Steam Input" and then try launching the game again.
The other possible cause I've seen: if you have Fraps running, quit Fraps, quit the game, then run the game again. It should work normally now. Once the game is already running, you can open Fraps and everything will work 100%.

Q: Wait, the Windows keys on my keyboard aren't working!
A: To make keyboard gameplay easier, I disable those keys while Super Duper Multitasking is running. When you quit the game, they'll once again function normally. If you find this to be bothersome, please let me know using one of the methods outlined above.

Q: I'm playing on keyboard. When things get hectic, some of my keys don't seem to respond. What's going on?
A: You may be using a keyboard that won't process more than 2 simultaneous keys. Many Apple MacBook integrated keyboards act this way, as well as some others. Try a USB keyboard (or a different USB keyboard) and that should alleviate the issue.

Q: It doesn't look like there's a ton of things to do. Are there more?
A: For ease of use, the game jumps right into a quick start menu when you press the A button (on Xbox-compatible or Switch Pro controllers), the X button (on DualShock), or the ENTER key. From the quick start menu, you can select "Main Menu" to see all available modes and options. Or, to jump straight to the Main Menu from Attract Mode, press LB/RB (Xbox/Steam), L1/R1 (DualShock), L/R (Switch Pro), or ESC (keyboard).

Q: Wait, what's Attract Mode?
A: It's the loop of things that happen while nobody is playing. Just about every arcade game ever made has this. Every game I release has this as well ;)

Q: I'm having friends over, or showing the game at a gathering. I want them to have fun, but I don't want them to break my records, to mess with my Mission Mode progress, or to earn Achievements/post to Leaderboards on my behalf. What should I do?
There's a feature made just for this purpose! It's called Guest Mode, and you can find it in Help & Options. Go there to enable it. All saving, Achievements, and Leaderboards will be disabled until the game is quit and restarted.

Q: Why is there an option to opt out of network features? What network features are we opting out of?
A: Participation in network features entails the following:

  • Each time you complete a Quickplay/Bonus Mode game, or a Mission Mode speedrun, your time (and number of attempts, if a speedrun) will be posted to Steam Leaderboards along with your username.
  • Each time you complete a Quickplay Mode game, your anonymous play statistics will be sent to Steam. This includes how many times each minigame and each slot were played and failed.

If you opt out of these features, none of this data will be sent. You can change this setting at any time from the Help & Options menu.

Q: I get a notification that says "Couldn't connect to Steam. Leaderboards/Achievements unavailable." How do I fix this?
A: There are a few possibilities here. One is that your Internet connection was interrupted. Another is that your Steam client needs to be updated (this fixed it on one of my test machines). Or maybe it's something I never saw during my testing, in which case you should e-mail me about it. But regardless of the cause, neither Leaderboards nor Achievements will work until you fix the issue, quit the game, and finally, restart it. If everything is working normally you should not see this message.

Q: I get a notification that says "Steam Leaderboard connection failed" or "Steam Leaderboard submission failed." What happened? Can I have it try to submit my record again?
If you see this message, the game tried to obtain a leaderboard connection, and failed. Or, the connection succeeded, but the game tried to post your record to the leaderboards three times and failed. It then repeated all of that and it still didn't work.

Steam puts a limit on how many Leaderboard submissions can happen within a short amount of time. If you are playing on Maximum difficulty, and are constantly setting new personal bests, it is possible that you will hit the limit. If that happens, play a different mode for a while; there is nothing I can do to "fix" this.

If this is not the cause...then it's hard to say what happened. Maybe you lost your Internet connection, maybe Steam is having issues on their end, or maybe something else went wrong, but regardless, the process failed. Unfortunately, to prevent cheating, there is no way to submit your record after the game is over. Sorry...

Q: What kinds of controllers can/should I use?
A: Here is the list of officially supported controllers:

  • Xbox Series/One/360: natively supported
  • DualSense/DualShock 4: supported via Steam Input, using an official configuration called "DualShock 4 (yyrGames Official)"
  • Switch Pro: supported via Steam Input.
  • Steam Deck/Steam Controller: supported via Steam Input, using an official configuration called "Steam Controller (yyrGames Official)"

The following controllers are not officially supported, but you may be able to use them by utilizing third-party drivers or tools:

  • DualShock 3 and earlier
  • Xbox OG
  • Wii Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro
  • Wii U Pro Controller

Basically, any controller that has two analog thumbsticks, bumpers/triggers, and face buttons *should* in theory work with this game. But you're on your own with getting it to work.

The following are examples of things that definitely won't work at all, simply because they lack one or more of the necessary controls:

  • Arcade-style digital joysticks (Hori, MadCatz, Razer, etc.)
  • Motion controllers such as Wii Remote, PlayStation Move, etc.
  • Hori Pokken Tournament or Pokken Tournament DX controllers
  • Guitar Hero/Rock Band guitar or drum controllers
  • Any other controller that lacks two analog thumbsticks, bumpers/triggers, and/or face buttons

If you attempt to connect a non-working controller, the game will post an error message and ignore the controller. Sorry! (Some unsupported controllers can still be used for Workout Mode, though.)

Q: I was playing on keyboard. Now I plugged in a controller and my records/progress are gone. What happened?
A: Don't worry, nothing actually happened. Because of the massive differences between controller and keyboard controls, and because a few of the minigames have difficulty changes between one and the other, Mission Mode progress and personal bests are tracked separately between the two. To switch between controller and keyboard mode, simply exit to Attract Mode and start the game with whatever control method you wish to use.

Please note that the arcade-style, local Quickplay Mode leaderboards are NOT separated between controller and keyboard.
Your Quickplay Mode/Mission Speedrun/Gauntlet Mode personal best for the currently selected options will be displayed in the lower corner before you begin.

Your Bonus Mode personal best for the currently selected control/difficulty combination will be displayed along the top of the screen before, during, and after play.

Q: I got a penalty for pausing the game? What the heck?!
A: Quickplay Mode is supposed to be a test of your ability to focus and multitask over a continuous period of time. Yes, sometimes life happens and you need to pause your game, sure. But if you pause the game more than twice, it is considered to be cheating, and you will be assessed a penalty as follows:

  • The 3rd time you pause: 2 seconds.
  • The 4th time you pause: 5 seconds.
  • The 5th+ time you pause: double the previous penalty, up to a maximum of 60 seconds.

The penalty will not decrease your elapsed time below zero; zero is the lowest it can go.

The penalty will not affect the difficulty of the game; it will continue to increase just as if you had not been penalized.

Q: What languages does this game support?
A: At the moment, only English.

Q: When will it support more languages?
A: I would love to include multi-language support in the future. However, the game wasn't originally built with that in mind, so some significant changes will be necessary to make that possible. Either buying the game, or sending me an e-mail specifically requesting multi-language support, will help convince me to make those changes and work on translations. (I would most likely not do the translations myself, but would seek out native speakers to assist.)

Q: What happened to the Leaderboard for number of attempts in Mission Mode? And, why aren't there Leaderboards for Gauntlet Mode?
A: The previous version, Super Multitasking, had a Leaderboard for the total number of attempts it took you to clear Mission Mode, even if you weren't speedrunning it. Obviously, you could work on this across multiple game sessions. However, this required security on the save file to prevent tampering. A Leaderboard for total points in Gauntlet Mode would work the same way.

On one occasion, during my pre-release testing, I lost my saved data because this verification failed, even though I had not tampered with the file. I was unable to reproduce the issue, nor was I able to find the cause. I didn't want to risk anyone else losing their saved data, so I removed the verification. This also means it was necessary to remove any Leaderboards that allow progress across multiple game sessions. I'm sorry if you would have enjoyed these. However, over 500 Leaderboards remain, so please have fun with those =)

Q: If I crowd around a controller with 4 other people and we play as a team, that sounds awesome, doesn't it?
A: Well, it kind of defeats the purpose of the game, which is to test your multitasking ability. But obviously, there's nothing I can do to stop you from trying this, and who am I to judge how people have fun with a game they bought? So go right ahead, but I would like to ask a favor: if you want to do this, please go into Help & Options and turn on Network Opt-Out or Guest Mode before you do. This way, players competing for the best times on the leaderboards will not be at a disadvantage. (If you forgot to do this, and feel bad about it, just send me a message and I'll remove the record manually...thank you!)

To those players competing for the best times: I have a reliable method for detecting leaderboard hackers, but obviously there is no way I can detect this; the honor system will have to do. Please understand =\

Q: What does the "Rank Display" option in Display Options do?
A: This displays difficulty information in the upper-left corner of the screen as you play. "GAME" shows the current minigame difficulty as a percentage of the maximum possible. "MULTI" shows the current multitasking difficulty as a number from 0 to 5.

Q: Okay. How do these values work?
A: These values will increase as you play; the rate of increase is determined by your selected difficulty level. When MULTI reaches the next whole number, minigame difficulty will decrease significantly, but will immediately begin increasing again, albeit at a slower rate than before.

Here is an explanation of what the MULTI value means:

  • Between 0 and 1, you will always play 1 minigame at a time. You won't be here for long.
  • Between 1 and 2, you will always play at least 1 minigame at a time, with a chance of a 2nd appearing. As the rank gets closer to 2, this chance increases.
  • Between 2 and 3, you will always play at least 2 minigames at a time, with a chance of a 3rd appearing. As the rank gets closer to 3, this chance increases.
  • If you are playing with 3 slots: once it reaches 3, it will stay at 3, and you'll play 3 minigames at a time until you fail.
  • If you are playing with more than 3 slots: between 3 and 4, you will always play at least 3 minigames at a time, with a chance of a 4th appearing. As the rank gets closer to 4, this chance increases.
  • If you are playing with 4 slots: once it reaches 4, it will stay at 4, and you'll play 4 minigames at a time until you fail.
  • If you are playing with 5 slots: between 4 and 5, you will always play at least 4 minigames at a time, with a chance of a 5th appearing. As the rank gets closer to 5, this chance increases.
  • Once it reaches 5, it will stay at 5, and you'll play 5 minigames at a time until you fail.
  • If you are playing on MAXIMUM difficulty, the value will ALWAYS be equal to the number of slots you selected.

Q: Do you plan to expand on this game, either with DLC or further releases?
A: The truth is, I had always planned from the beginning to release 3 versions of this game.

Version 1: Multitasking 1.0, released in mid-2016 on Xbox 360 (XBLIG).

Version 2: Super Multitasking, released in early 2018 on PC (Steam). Adds more minigames and Challenges, Bonus Modes, Leaderboards, Achievements, keyboard support & more.

Version 3: Super Duper Multitasking, released on February 4th, 2025. Adds more of all of the above, plus everything else I ever wanted to put into the game.

I now consider this game to be a complete work. Of course I will maintain it in the future with bug fixes and small updates, but I do not plan to add any further significant features.

Q: But but but but what about Steam Workshop? What about letting us create and add our own minigames? What about daily missions or extra Master Missions or a harder Mission difficulty or a second Demon's Road or ...?
A: I've been working on this game for 10 years and I'm ready to be done. Sorry. If the game actually becomes popular at some point, I will consider adding more Missions, but beyond that, I think I'm finished.

Q: Are there Trading Cards in Super Duper Multitasking?
A: No...well, not yet, at least. A set of 6 Trading Cards has already been created; each depicts a different way that Mr. Multitasking can meet his end ;) All of the other associated assets (badges, profile backgrounds, etc.) have been created as well. However, I can't actually add them to the game until certain (unknown) thresholds have been met. This is due to Steam's new Trading Card policy, which was designed to eliminate the "fake games" that exist solely for the purpose of Trading Cards. The policy is great, and certainly will improve Steam as a whole. But that means if you want Trading Cards in Super Duper Multitasking, you'll want to spread the word! Talk about it, Tweet about it, stream it, shout it from the rooftops =) If and when the threshold is met, I will flip the switch and you will have your Trading Cards.

Q: How many people worked on this game?
A: I'm proud to say that this game, and everything in it, is solely my creation, with the only exceptions being the non-synthesized sound effects. (Those came from a royalty-free sound library.) It took many hundreds of hours for me to create, balance, and test this, and I really hope that you enjoy it! I did have testing assistance from a handful of people, who will be mentioned either in-game, in documentation, or both.

Q: I'm not familiar with yyrGames beyond this. What's your deal?
A: I create arcade-style games exclusively, and have been doing so for over 15 years now. Unfortunately, because I was releasing them exclusively on Xbox Live Indie Games, most of my catalog was delisted in 2017, so I'm currently in the process of porting them to more modern platforms. You can check my progress at yyrgames.com.
